Culinary Curb Appeal

Having recently moved from a much larger lot from out of town, our clients were presented with an interesting design predicament. They had big ambitions to grow their own food, but were challenged by small but sunny, sloping front yard, shady backyard, and determined local wildlife that includes deer and bears! Their house is located on a round-about, and neighbours regularly slow down as they pass by, so they wanted to create something special for their neighbours to enjoy as well. The design process lead us to create a small yet calming sunken water feature, micro-terraces, and a meandering driftwood and stone pathway that leads through deer-resistant herbs, flowers, and medicinals. Sweet fruits and berries are kept to a minimum, to ensure that bears are not tempted to return throughout the season. This project coincided with a major interior renovation, so our plant budget was kept lean, but the perennial plantings will flourish come springtime, soaking up the winter rains after a late fall planting.
