Your Future Foodscape

YOUR FUTURE FOODSCAPE

Where landscaping and the local food movement come together!

(Join us IN PERSON, or ONLINE)

WHAT TO EXPECT

--------------------------------

An evening exploration of how to grow-your-own food, overcoming your space and time constraints, and design an edible ecosystem tailored to your land and lifestyle.

60 minute presentation followed by Q&A with a guided discussion.

WHAT IS FOODSCAPING?

--------------------------------

Foodscaping, aka edible landscaping, exists where landscaping and the local food movement come together.

Traditionally, it has been viewed as integrating edible and ornamental plants to create landscapes that are both productive and beautiful.

But what if we considered foodscaping beyond the garden? What if we extended our idea of home, beyond our houses? What if there were edible landscapes everywhere?

ABOUT THIS TALK:

--------------------------------

In this evening talk, we will explore the potential of your future foodscape. Whether you have a tiny apartment or abundant acreage, it is possible for you to see your home in an entirely new way. This will be a journey of possibilities and practicalities, starting in your own home, and expanding to your balcony, backyard, and beyond.

WHY YOU SHOULD COME:

--------------------------------

In this evening exploration, we will be planting the seeds of your future foodscape. In your near future, food will be sprouting up in the most surprising places.

You can eat your houseplants, your furniture feeds you, your balcony is bountiful, and your backyard is bursting with beautiful abundance. The paths you walk are plentiful, and tending and harvesting has never felt more natural.

In your future foodscape, you’ll find so much more than just food. You’ll be helping to regenerate the land, and our communities, with every home-cooked meal.

Join us for this special evening event, where we plant these seeds of possibility!

ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

--------------------------------

A Co-Founder of Cascaia Collective, Joshua Clae was born into a family of farmers, foodies, and nature lovers. Enchanted by his grandparents' farm and fascinated by growth, Joshua majored in Urban Studies at the University of Calgary, eventually travelling overseas to Pacific Asia to study the Globalization and Sustainability of Cities. Returning home, he began seeking practical, scalable, and inspiring solutions to the social and environmental problems that he witnessed both overseas and at home. In 2011 he began studying food forestry, nutrition, permaculture, and homesteading. The journey had come full circle, and Joshua found a career connected to his original joy and inspiration: the farm, the forest, and the dinner table. In 2013 he co-founded Edible Landscapes Design Ltd. in Victoria, BC, working to transform the City of Gardens (and beyond) into an edible ecosystem bursting with superfoods for generations to come.

Edible Plants for Emergencies

Recent events have highlighted the fragility of our food system, and many people are feeling urgency to take greater responsibility for their food and where it comes from. In light of the pandemic and the associated lockdowns, unemployment, workforce limitations, and rising food costs, we are witnessing an unprecedented interest in food security, local supply chains, health & wellness, and immunity. People want to take action, but where to begin?!

This online workshop focuses on edible plants that are particularly useful in the context of emergencies. We will focus on widely-available wild plants, nutrient-dense “weeds”, and fast-growing annual plants that ensure a quick and abundant harvest.

Food Forestry Plants: Growing for Bounty, Beauty & Resilience

Food forestry, aka edible forest gardening, is experiencing a renaissance all around the world, but the truth is that edible forest gardening is an ancient and widespread practice that is many thousands of years old. In fact, food forestry has been called “Gardening for 1000 Years. In this workshop, we will introduce the concept of food forestry, and shine a light on some of the most powerful plants used to create these beautiful, bountiful, low-maintenance edible ecosystems. We will go beyond the plants discussed in our previous two workshops (“Edible Plants for Emergencies” and “Perennial Vegetables & Edible Ornamentals”:), highlighting our favourite plants from every layer of the food forest (canopy, understory, shrubs, herbaceous, groundcovers, root crops, vines, and fungi).
