Government House Food Forest
This food forest was designed as a living classroom, supporting hands-on learning for children participating in the Growing Young Farmers Society School Program. The goal was to create a space where observation, curiosity, and long-term care could develop alongside food production.
A range of growing conditions was intentionally introduced to encourage experimentation and comparison. Different soil-building approaches and planting strategies allow students to witness how living systems respond over time, fostering understanding through direct experience rather than instruction alone.
Plant selections were made with care, prioritizing species that would reliably produce while students were in school. This ensured that learning remained tangible and rewarding, with harvests reinforcing the connection between patience, stewardship, and nourishment.
Designed to evolve over many years, the food forest will continue to support education, seasonal abundance, and ecological literacy, offering future generations a place to learn not only how food is grown, but how landscapes are tended with intention.
